Graduating Thesis Show & Artist Statement

Why do we create metaphors and visual connections to the human genital other than the real terms and images? Why do sexual education scenes in young adult movies involve bananas being used as models for penises? These are some of the questions I will be exploring in my body of work. I approach these themes with humor, contradiction, and metaphors.
If a banana can represent a penis by placing a condom on it, what else can? I will be representing male genitals with suggestive shaped fruits and vegetables in-cased in condoms to reinforce the contradiction. By continuing to explore the visual connection with human genitals, I will also be cutting open fruits to represent the vagina. Open fruits have been represented in art history to define female genitals and female reproduction. Artists such as Audrey Flack, Theresa Dunn, and Dutch still life artists also explored female genitals with images of open fruit.
These pieces are executed in watercolor, combined with color pencil for detail. The images are on blank white Winsor & Newton paper to enhance the color of the fruits and vegetables. The technique is approached delicately, to portray beautiful images but also absurdity.
In addition to this body of work, I will combine the figure with visual connections and metaphors. I want these images to be humorous and have a tongue and cheek quality to them. My intention is for these paintings and drawings to represent the absurd conservative outlook in our culture relating to human genitals. It is okay to laugh about human genitals, but it is more important to be educated on the proper terms and meanings.

"Great Grandpa Beck"

Pastels, 8by10. I did this one for my grandpa because he is very proud of me and he has this crazy idea for me to. He wants me to draw all the generations of Beck's who have owned the family business. Only 3 but it would nice to have it displayed on the wall.

"New Mexico"

Color pencil. It is a nice size drawing. I did this from a picture my dad took from his elk trip in New Mexico.

"Faithful Friend"

Pet Portriat done in watercolor. I did this for a gentleman for his wife and she loved it. It is 8by10 and i also got a mat and frame for this piece and the total came to $70. not seen with mat and frame.

"Jackie"

This was my second watercolor dog portrait i did. size 4by6 As i went you can see the improvements in my skills in watercolor. see below

"A Boys Best Friend"

This watercolor dog portrait was done for a lady for her son's birthday. It is 8 by 10 and i charged $45. I really enjoyed painting this dog and I am very proud of myself. For the same lady I completed two other dog portraits. I will be posting those also.

Lonely Cabin

In 2004 I did this for my father because this is his home away from home. His uncle and him built this little cabin in the woods and it is where we spend our 4th of July every year. It is also my fathers hunting camp every October and November. It is 18 by 24 and it is done in acrylics. I love my father.

Letting go Series

Sorry the series isn't in order in which i painted them but you can get the idea that I was exploring the techinque of Letting Go, Abstract Painting. I always stick with the same style real tight, realistic and right to the point. I needed to release the stress that I get when I try to make everything perfect. The paintings are suppose to get you the feeling of relax and letting go. You can still kind of see where I try to control and put detail. I am very proud of these pieces.

Chair

Pink....this was a study of Maitess style of painting. It really isn't a good example of his work but i tryed. It reminds me of Topical Fruit drink or a HOT summer day.

The woods

Expression painting, I looked at Emily Carr works to come up with piece. I really enjoyed doing the painting because it was free flowing and relaxing. This was a big piece.

Fire of 2002

This was a memorial picture to the fire that took part of my families business in 2002. It was from a photograph that one of our employees took few days after the event. This picture was done in million and million of dots. I used the stipple point techinque. I completed it in about 3 months and I really enjoyed using the stipple point. It is about 16 by 20.

I thought it fitted the topic of Angels and Devils because of the statue of Jesus and the melted and ruined items that was from the fire.

Love MONKEY

This painting was painted by using the knife techinque. It was very fun to do. The monkey was given to me by a very loveable guy my furture husband Clive. It was done in acrylic.

Self Portrait

This piece was created during my senior year in highschool. I made it to like a puzzel because as i grow and learn its like adding a piece of the puzzel to make me whole. It was done in color pencil and it was mounted on a piece of wood to give it the puzzely feel.

Hunter

Done in watercolor. I did this for a friend of my fathers. It was my first watercolor portrait of a person. It took a lot longer then i expected to. His friend was very happy with the end results.

Clown fish

This is a painting I did for my boyfriend and he is crazy about Nemo (clownfishes). I thought it would be a good one to post for illustration friday. I used acrylics to complete this piece. I did complete this painting in 2004.

Dutch Style

This painting turned out to be a very nice one. I really enjoyed painting this picture. My favorite part is the brandy bottle. It was done in Acrylics.

This picture is done in airbrush. It was my first real complete piece in airbrush. The size of this piece is 18 by 24. I am very proud of this piece.

Maggie's Dog

This painting was done in watercolor and the image came from a photograph. I did it for a fellow employee for a memorial pet portrait for her son. This isn't the whole painting; its just focusing on the face.
